John G. Mansfield, Jr. was born on April Fool's Day, 1942 in Tacoma, Washington.
He attended McKinley, Stewart Jr. High, Lincoln and Stadium High Schools, class of '60.
The most fun in school was playing trombone and tuba in the school bands.
John served in the U.S. Navy from 1960-65, with tours in San Diego,
Guam Trust Territory and as a Radioman 2nd/class onboard USS Menhaden, a diesel submarine.
In 1966 John married Kathleen Paladie from St Paul, MN and they moved to Washington D.C. where he worked as a communications
specialist for the government. They had two tours overseas on the island of Cyprus and Nigeria.
He decided to attend college and went to Green River CC, Univ. of Washington and Univ. of Puget Sound, earning a BA in Communications, class of '75.
Returning to federal service, they had tours in Iran, England and the Washington D.C.
area with many TDY trips around the world.
John retired in 1992 and he and Kathi returned home to Washington where he owned The
Media Center, an audio-visual production company. At the same time, John researched, wrote and published "Cruisers For
Breakfast: War Patrols of the USS Darter and USS Dace" about the two submarines that started the Battle
of Leyte Gulf in 1944. John became a real estate agent and is presently with ERA
Integrity Realty in Sumner, WA. John & Kathi divorced in 2000 and he married present
wife Lori in 2002. They live in Ashford, WA at the base of Mt Rainier National Park. John has a daughter Jadene (University Place) and three grandchildren, Maria, Michael & Johnny.
His hobbies are photography, music and working on do-it-yourself projects when time allows. He looks forward
